HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY
TO MY LUCY BEAR!
Lucy turned one on Tuesday this week! So in honor of that, here’s my first official puppy post!
Alright everyone, you all know how much I adore my puppy Lucy, so much so that I did an entire post with just pictures of her! Today’s post is all about things that we bought her and have had to either repurchase something better or worked out for us. This will be super helpful for all people looking into getting a puppy who need some advice on what to buy that will be investments. I had NO IDEA getting a puppy was so expensive… I wish I would have known these things 8 months ago!
10 MUST HAVE ITEMS WHEN GETTING A PUPPY:
Lucy eats her food too quickly. If she eats it too quickly she will almost automatically throw it up. In order to keep her from inhaling her food, we bought this fun food bowl which makes it take more time for her to eat her food. It doesn’t extend it by much time, but enough to make sure she doesn’t get sick from eating too fast.
We live in a townhouse and don’t have a fenced in yard. This allows us to play with Lucy without us having to walk her on a leash. We put it down and she can feel more free. We also use it sometimes in winter if it’s super cold out and we don’t want to go outside (although she’s stubborn and will typically make us go outside anyway)
THIS IS AMAZING. I would recommend buying this once your puppy is done growing… otherwise you’ll be like us and have 6 harnesses that your dog has out grown. This harness is life changing. We can walk our dog without feeling like we’re being pulled. It’s great! We can actually enjoy walking her now.
This obviously is something for goldendoodles or dogs with goldendoodle like coats specifically, but we had to purchase a specific comb for her coat. We do have a brush, but it won’t get into the bottom of her fur enough to keep it from matting.
This is a given, but we have one of those waste disposal bag holders on Lucy’s leash and so we decided early on to buy waste disposal bags in bulk… it saves us money in the long run!
When we decided to not use a retractable leash anymore, we went shopping to find the best regular leash and my fiance took this job VERY seriously. We ended up with a bungee leash and it’s been GREAT! Lucy can’t chew through it, it’s SUPER durable. We won’t need another leash for a long time (knock on wood)
We’ve used this in multiple ways. As a play pen, the door to block Lucy off from going down stairs, and now we are using it to block her off in the kitchen (as I speak she’s in the kitchen while I’m at work… fingers crossed!) We love that we can take it apart and put it into multiple different ways for whatever we need it for.
Luckily we inherited the one Lucy currently uses because we bought the wrong size origionally! Lucy had a small crate and once we saw how big she was getting (specifically how tall!) we knew we would have to upgrade. We put her in the crate at night and during the day (but like I said, we’re trying to transition her into the kitchen during the day). Make sure you do your research before putting so much money into a crate and look into one that will fit your grown dog, and then make sure you have a divider that you can use for your puppy while they grow.
WARNING: DON’T USE THIS RIGHT AWAY. Lucy didn’t get unlimited water until she was around 8-9 months old. We wanted to make sure she was fully potty trained. She still doesn’t get water during the day if she’s in the crate, but whenever she’s out of the crate she now has access to unlimited water, AND she doesn’t have to bug us! LAZY GIRL HACK!
If you have carpet anywhere in your house that your puppy is going to be, this is essential. We held off buying one of these for a while and would run to my fiance’s parent’s house and borrow theirs when we needed it while potty training until we just bit the bullet and bought our own.
Did I miss anything??? I plan on doing a toy guide eventually… today we just covered basic things you’ll need when getting a puppy. Like I’ve said, I had NO IDEA how much work and money I was in for when Lucy came into our lives. I LOVE her… I am totally a dog mom and I embrace it. I can’t wait to continue sharing my Lucy’s life with you! I can’t believe she’s one already!
