After my last post about the essentials you need if you’re getting a puppy, I talked about doing a post on toys that have been game changers. Here’s that post!
If your puppy is anything like my Lucybear, she looks sweet and innocent, but she’s an INTENSE chewer. From the very beginning we’ve struggled to keep up with her favorite hobby: chewing. We’ve tried almost everything there is to try. At this point: here are the toys that have kept up with her intense chewing habit that are worth EVERY PENNY we have paid for them.
*please note, we do not feed Lucy rawhides, we used to and then decided to cut them out of her diet, as she was going through almost a bone a day. We have read that they are bad for her, and since she needs to chew, it was costing us a small fortune to keep up with her rawhide obsession*
- Nylabone Dinosaur: Lucy’s ride or die. This dinosaur goes everywhere with us. She has chewed it so much it’s head is pretty much nonexistent. If she’s chewing on a toy, 9 out of 10, it is this one. It’s a tough sturdy toy that we’ve had for months and is still going strong.
- Antlers: Antlers are what we replaced Lucy’s rawhide obsession with. They are a great chew toy. They are more expensive, but last much longer (months) than a rawhide, which would last MAYBE a day at our house. I recommend getting a variety of different types so your dog can change it up when they feel like it.
- Stuffingless toys: Believe me, we learned this one the hard way… if you have an intense chewer… don’t bother with real stuffed animal toys. Go stuffingless. This will save you the worry of having your dog accidently swallow something, and the hassle of cleaning up stuffing all over your house. Sure they’re not the cutest in the world, but they get the job done and there are a variety of animal choices.
Piggy: This is Lucy’s newest obsession! We have a video of when we gave her the piggy and when she fell in love with it. Although this isn’t meant for intense chewers, so far, she hasn’t ruined it, which is good enough for me!
Lucy also has a rubber bone from the dollar store that she’s in love with. She’s had 2 of them in her lifetime. It’s her favorite toy to play fetch with.
Holee Ball: Obviously Lucy has a lot of different balls she plays with, but this one is cool because she can actually put it in her mouth since it’s not completely solid. She loves carrying it around with her.
Treat Ball: This thing is super cool! We put some of Lucy’s food in it when we need to distract her for a while. Be warned, if your dog is super smart they MAY figure out how to carry it and open it… I know Lucy has figured it all out! Shocker…
Socks: I SWEAR I HAVE NO IDEA WHY but Lucy is OBSESSED with socks. of any kind. she has stolen so many of my socks and torn them to shreds. From now on, we plan on just buying fuzzy socks in bulk for her to chew on instead of stuffed animals. They seem to last longer…
While I’ve laid out all of the toys that have worked for us, despite Lucy’s crazy chewing obsession, Lucy does have a few toys that have stood the test of time, even though they aren’t what we would have bought her now that we know she’s an intense chewer. She does have a few stuffed animals that she is deeply attached to and loves even though we know she could tear them apart in a heartbeat if she really wanted to.
Here’s the toy that has made it through everything and Lucy loves:
Teddy Bear: Lucy got her teddy bear when we had her for 2 days. She is obsessed with it. She carries it around with her all the time and often sleeps with it in her crate. While she probably could tear this thing apart in seconds, for some reason she’s super attacked to it.
Well, there you have it. They toys that keep Lucy occupied and keep us sane. We love her to death and would buy her anything, and these are her favorites. I’ll add them to my recommendations page for dogs for quick review!
My next doggy post will be about our favorite toys that you can add treats into!! Some were mentioned here, but I’ll be doing a whole post on them. Lucy LOVES her treat toys!
What are your dogs favorite toys? I would love to know! We always get Lucy new toys and she loves them (and then typically destroys them). Comment your dogs favorites down below!!
